STYROFOAM - The Blue Foam From Dow
  STYROFOAM, the blue extruded polystyrene (XPS) foam is a special, high performance insulation material, developed by Dow more than 50 years ago. Its closed cell structure offers a number of special characteristics and advantages at the installation:  
  • high insulation value long-term,
  • excellent mechanical strength,
  • no capillarity, high moisture resistance,
  • resistance to freeze-thaw cycles,
  • long-term durability,
  • lightweight and easy to handle,
  • easy to cut with simple tools,
  • resistant to rot and deterioritation,
  • clean, odourless and non-irritant to skin
The advantages of using STYROFOAM insulation are obvious for specifiers,   contractors and building owners:
  • consistant high performance thermal insulation value for the life-time of the building.
  • long-term, safe and reliable solution also when the insulation is placed on the external side of the building envelope in severe climatic conditions, directly exposed to moisture and freeze-thaw effects.

  •   Dow has developed a range of tailor-made insulation products, specifically designed to     meet the different requirements of the various applications:

  • STYROFOAM SL / ROOFMATE SL for insulation of flat roofs, floors and structures below ground,
  • STYROFOAM TG for insulation of cavity walls, pitched roofs and agricultural buildings,
  • STYROFOAM IB with rough surface, for insulation of interior and exterior walls, sockles and to prevent cold bridges,
  • STYROFOAM HD 300 for insulation of cold storage floors.

      General application information  
    • STYROFOAM boards contain a flame retardant additive to inhibit accidental ignition from a small fire source. The boards are, however, combustible and, if exposed to an intensive fire, may burn rapidly.
    • STYROFOAM boards can be stored outside, but should be protected against intense sunlight, preferably by retention in their original packaging. The boards should not exposed to other ignition sources. Exposed to intense sunlight over prolonged periods, the surface of the boards degrades into fine dust. STYROFOAM TG boards should be stored inside.
    • STYROFOAM products should be applied within the recommended temperature range. When exposed to higher temperature than the recommended max. 75° C, the boards can either soften, undergo irreversible dimensional changes and eventually melt or become brittle and lose its mechanical properties. Under no circumstances STYROFOAM should be installed under black membrane.
    • STYROFOAM boards can be cut using knife, fine teeth saw, hot wire equipment, etc.
    • STYROFOAM boards are resistant to most commonly occurring construction materials like solvent-free bituminous compounds, water-based wood preservatives, lime, cement, plaster, anhydrous gypsum as well as alcohols, acids and alkalis. Certain organic materials like solvent based wood preservatives, coal tar and derivatives (aerosol etc.), paint thinners and common solvents such as acetone, ethyl acetate, petrol toluene, white spirit can attack the XPS boards resulting in softening, shrinkage and even dissolving with the consequent loss of performance. When bonding STYROFOAM boards, the use of solvent free adhesive is recommended. Compatibility with polystyrene foam should be sought from the adhesive manufacturer prior to application.
    • STROFOAM products are not bio-degradable in the environment and do not present an environmental hazard in the water/soil compartment.
